Drought tolerant
In addition to pest and disease resistant food, drought tolerant foods is also another positive of genetically modified foods. Corn is an example of a food that has been modified to thrive in drought. Corn in America has been modified by biotechnology to be drought resistant in order to produce more corn. Drought resistant food is a vial necessity because of climate change, foods need to be able to adapt to different climates in order to survive. "Working on something like drought is more complex than introducing a trait like insect resistance," says plant breeder Bob Reiter "We have screened through thousands of genes in the past several years". As you can tell by Bob Reiter's statement it wasn't an easy process and wasn't taken lightly. It took them several years to find the right gene (Biello, D. 2011).
